Details of Global Hunger Fast

Dear Volunteers,

Firstly, we would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to all of you for quickly responding in the ‘hour of need’ and for standing up against one of the biggest social evils – “Corruption“. We start our protest tomorrow and this mail will get you started on our ambitious path.

The Global Hunger Fast is an effort to express our solidarity with Manjunath and his family and to convey a message to GoI that we shall not stand any more atrocities. The implicit message is a) to fight corruption and b) to spread awareness in the society to uproot corruption. Lastly lets all pay respects to Manujanth and Dubey who fought against corruption and sacrificed their lives.

Lets all pledge together that we will stand up against corruption at all times. The path will be difficult; nevertheless we shall not stop in the midway. We will not renounce it.
From now on, our mission would be “Na Lenge Aur Na Denge, i.e., We will not give or take Bribe”

General guidelines for the fast:

1. No food or juices for the day – suggested time: From Morning till 5 PM. Water is optional.
2. Everyone can end their fast by observing a minute of silence to Manjunath and taking a personal oath to fight and eliminate corruption at all levels.

3. Talk to your friends and encourage more people to join our struggle. Encourage them to pledge to our mission “Na Lenge aur Na Denge”.

Volunteers, if you have not announced a date for your fast yet, please let us know and we can mark you for that date.

If you have any questions/comments, please let us know at Brunda.kattekola@gmail.com
or soomuh@yahoo.com

Again, we sincerely thank you for your effort to wipe out corruption from India and together we will achieve it.

In Solidarity,
Somu Kumar

Volunteers of Global Hunger Fast

Thursday, December 01, 2005

Press Release:

Fast for Justice: Global Hunger Fast, 12/03/05 – 12/10/05

Manjunath Shanmugam was brutally murdered for doing his job honestly in Lakhimpur-Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh on November 19th 2005.

Manjunath (27), an IIM-L graduate worked as an area sales manager with Indian Oil Corporation since 2002. He did the unacceptable crime in Public Sector Office. He refused to accept bribe and sealed the pumps that sold adulterated petrol (petrol mixed with kerosene). This irked the local pump owners who eventually got rid of him by cruelly murdering him.

Over the last few decades, the corruption in India has increased exponentially. And anyone who has attempted to end it has been either tortured or killed to death. Couple of years ago, Satyendra Dubey was killed for exposing the corruption scam of Golden Quadrangle project.
In an effort to curb the corruption and to express their solidarity with Manjunath & his family, volunteers around the world are organizing a week long “Global Hunger Fast”. The relay fast would begin on December 3rd and culminate on December 10th with a nonviolent demonstration in front of Gandhi Statue – Indian Embassy, Washington DC and elsewhere. We encourage volunteers around the world to organize similar nonviolent demonstrations on December 10th 2005.

The goals of the fast are to demand justice for Manjunath, punish the culprits, and appeal the Government of India to better protect the lives of honest individuals like Manjunath and Dubey.

We visualize this weeklong act of observing fast as one of the efforts for eliminating corruption and as a message to the concerned authorities to take a stricter hold of the situation.

I would request you all earnestly to join us in this protest for justice. For more details on the fast, please contact Somu Kumar @ 703 728 8987 or Brunda Kattekola @ 785 979 1118
Thank you for joining us in this effort to fight corruption and save innocent lives.

Regards
Brunda Kattekola

Global Hunger Fast - Volunteers:

Tuesday, November 29, 2005

For an honest man - Manjunath:

By this time, most of you must have heard or read about Manjunath Shanmugam. Manjunath an IIM-L graduate was killed on November 19th 2005 in Lakhimpur-Kheri district in UP for doing his job honestly. It is extremely sad and outrageous to see a person paying with his life for resisting corruption and adultery.

Has the situation in India downgraded to such a level that any person trying to resist corruption is either tortured or killed? Couple of years ago, Satyendra Dubey was killed in the Golden Quadrangle Road project for exposing Rs.55 crores corruption scam and now we have lost yet another socially conscious citizen, Manjunath Shanmugam.

This has to end sometime and as responsible citizens of India, the onus is upon us to put an effort to end these atrocities. Although we are far from our country, the least we can do from here is to express solidarity with Manjunath's family and demand justice.

We are organizing a "Global Hunger Fast" to protest the heinous crime and spread awareness. Volunteers around the globe (who like you and me have been shocked by the nature of the crime) have decided to fast in relay fashion starting Saturday, December 3rd 2005, for one week.

I would request you all earnestly to join us in this protest for Manjunath. This might not end all the corruption but at least it will be a starting point for the authorities concerned to take a stricter hold of the situation.

Hunger Fast Plan:

December 3rd 2005: First Day of the Hunger Fast.
December 4th -9th 2005: During these six days, Volunteers around the globe, at least one person at all time, observing fast.
December 10th 2005: Final Day of the Hunger Fast. On this day, all of us would assemble in front of Gandhi Statue of Indian Embassy, Washington DC and observe the fast together. We will end the fast in the evening with a nonviolent demonstration to demand justice for Manjunath and punishment for the culprits. We encourage volunteers elsewhere to show nonviolent, public demonstration on the same day in solidarity with others.

Goals of the Global Hunger Fast:

These would include:-
1. Justice for Manjunath Shanmugam and his family.
2. Punishment of the culprits involved.
3. An appeal to Govt. of India to better protect honest individuals like Dubey and Manjunath
